HELLO! My name is Katie and I am a visual artist, arts educator, and as of July 3rd, 2018 an adoptive parent. My husband, Andrew, and I began our adoption journey December 2017. We matched and placed with a little boy, Lachlan, July 2018. It was all quite a world wind!
When we began this amazing adventure, I became really overwhelmed with learning all the ins and outs of the adoption world, including what an adoption profile was. I had the design skills to create our profile book (I hold a Bachelor and Master in Fine Art), but became stressed about what specifics I was suppose to include. So, I decided to pay $700 to an organization to design our profile book for us. When we received our profile book I was unhappy with the result. It was not visually appealing, it had too much paragraphed text, the font type was difficult to read, and I felt like it did not represent us at all. I thought I was being a "picky artist" so I gave it some time and sat on it.
A couple months went by and I was still unhappy with it. I went back to the organization to see if they could change the font type so that it was more readable and they told me they would "quote me a price." I was shocked to hear that even after paying $700 for the profile, that I had to pay even more to do a font style change. It was at this time that I decided that I would just take the hit of losing the $700 and finally design the adoption profile that I imagined. Since then, I have dedicated time outside of my full-time job in designing and re-designing adoption profile books and creating videos for hopeful adoptive families.
